Fire worship and shamanistic reverence are manifestations of humanity's imagination of symbols and exploration of the unknown, shaping spiritual idols that lead to various forms of cultural dissemination. Pan'an Refining Fire is a typical example of this phenomenon. Fire worship exhibits a global characteristic, and Fire Refining project takes this intangible cultural heritage as a universal entry point into the world of fire worship.
The people of Pan'an convey hopeful aspirations through the forge fire ritual, where individuals barefoot dance upon the volcano, engaging in a lively performance resembling a dance with fire.
This project meticulously observes the dynamic characteristics of hands, feet, and body movements during the forge fire ritual, reconstructing a virtual and real combined forge fire scene. The design team utilizes a natural perception system to capture participants' positions and body postures, parameterizing the "fire dance" process of burning, testing, and stepping on fire. The redesign of the forge fire ritual in a mixed reality space aims to provide viewers with a spiritual experience of dancing with fire. The artwork is currently on display at the Zhejiang Intangible Cultural Heritage Museum.
The work Continuity originates from Ding Shanhe Village, where the production of Yuhang Silk Floss takes place. By capturing the love embedded within families involved in silk production, the project portrays emotional connections among family members.
This project establishes a natural interaction system, featuring "cocoon" installations within the scene. These "cocoon" devices respond to participants' actions of picking them up through changes in color temperature and breathing rhythms. The "virtual silk" projections that flow along with the movement of the "cocoon" dynamically reveal the subtle flow and transmission of love during interaction. By constructing a Natural User Interface (NUI) interaction system, the project integrates the tactile sensation of silk, the memories of intangible cultural heritage, and virtual digital visual effects through multi-channel information fusion. This unified expression captures unspeakable and implicit emotions, aiming to resonate deeply within individuals, conveying love within families to each participant. The project seeks to raise awareness about expressing love more openly, touching the innermost emotions of people.
"Born as brine, called salt in human life." —Shuo Wen Jie Zi (a Chinese dictionary from the 2nd century)
A grain of salt, a tiny crystal, gleams with the subtle light of civilization.
The salt industry thrives along the coast of eastern Zhejiang, marking the inception of Ningbo city. Every brick, every wall, and every fence have been nurtured by the briny air, shaping the city's millennia-old history.
Looking back at the extensive history of the salt industry, one can witness ancient humans boiling the sea, the encounter of Zhu Yu with divine birds, the bustling scenes at Sanjiangkou, and the passage of time at Yuquan Field. Today, Huao Salt Field preserves the memory of salt production: salt fields, salt farmers, and the generations that followed, creating a lineage of memories.
This project primarily showcases the intangible cultural heritage of Ningbo Sea Salt Sun-drying Technique in Zhejiang Province, tracing its roots to a meaningful story that began 4,400 years ago. The project team utilizes Mixed Reality (MR) technology and content recognition techniques to create a virtual scene narrating the history of the salt industry. Beyond the sensory experience provided by traditional paper books, the project guides viewers to approach and explore the ancient and modern history of the Ningbo salt industry, offering a cross-temporal experience of the virtual and real intersecting world of intangible cultural heritage craftsmanship.
This project focuses on extracting three key scenes during the Longjing tea roasting process: the pre-green pot phase, post-green pot phase, and the shining pot phase. By capturing gesture data for each stage of the craft, the project highlights ten specific hand movements (including expanding, pressing, patting, pressing, pushing, pulling, grinding, grabbing, shaking, tossing) involved in the West Lake Longjing tea roasting process. In each of the three key scenes, these gesture data are visually rendered differently, creating an immediate and unique interactive experience for participants. Real-time presentation of gesture data in various interactive stages enhances the immersion for each participant.
The project aims to amplify the delicate roasting actions, injecting multiple dimensions of experience to explore the boundaries and dimensions of traditional intangible cultural heritage. By doing so, it seeks to rekindle public interest in and attention to the richness of intangible cultural heritage.
The theme of the project is Sound Walk. Team members collected stories from nearly twenty professionals associated with Longquan Celadon, selecting seven representative figures. Each of these figures has their unique Celadon musical segment composed. By dispersing these Celadon musical segments across different areas within the garden, the project creates a digitally interactive experience space spanning the entire garden. Participants explore and understand the traditional firing techniques of Longquan Celadon by seeking out the "Celadon" stories within the space.
Employing a youthful and engaging approach, along with diverse media forms, the project aims to introduce more young people to this intangible cultural heritage. By spreading and promoting it, the project contributes to the co-creation of the future of intangible cultural heritage.
